Worbarrow Bay

I have been making gemstone jewellery since 1995 and started producing silver jewellery in 2000, after many years working in textiles. Mainly self taught (and still learning!) I produce simple shapes using gemstones, sea glass and sterling silver which are affordable and easy to wear.

Increasingly, I also work with sea glass and pebbles, mostly collected on my travels, around Britain’s coastline, shaped only by the waves and sand, simply mounted in silver. As we recycle more, sea glass becomes rarer. The colours of the sea glass are often specific to areas of coastline and some are not available around Britain’s shores. To widen the palette I can offer my customers, a little of my sea glass is sourced from abroad from fellow collectors who often are searching for colours that we have in abundance.

My love of textiles remains. I have continued to explore the way that they too can be embellished by the use of colour and texture, leading to an exploration of the complex patterns of Kumihimo silk braiding and the spontaneity of Shibori dyeing. My work now includes a sumptuous range of silk and velvet scarves, each individually hand printed, dyed and devoréd in my North Somerset workshop.

For those who love the effect of shibori dyeing and would like to have a go themselves, I have designed a shibori dyeing scarf kit as a simple introduction to this fascinating art. I also run 1-day introductory workshops in shibori dyeing techniques for groups of 2 to 4 people, using steam fix dyes that can be fixed in a microwave.

My jewellery and textiles are sold through a number of galleries in the South west. I also sell through craft fairs and open studio events.

I am always pleased to receive enquiries from prospective galleries who may be interested in exhibiting my work. Email me at sue.harris@blueboxstudio.co.uk
